Garsen: Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira has announced a government initiative to supply electricity to select villages in Garsen Constituency, with an allocation of Sh400 million for the year 2025. The announcement was made in response to remarks by area MP Ali Wario, who highlighted that villages such as Kitere and Saloni have not yet received electricity supply.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mr. Wachira made the disclosure during the International Day of Clean Energy event held in the Minijila area of Garsen, Tana River County. At the event, he also distributed 2,000 cooking jikos to vulnerable residents. In addition, he commissioned electrification projects at Nduru and Iqra Secondary Schools, which will benefit approximately 42 households in the Chara location. Furthermore, the government plans to establish four solar panel centers in areas including Nanighi, Mnazini, and Kitere, with an investment of Sh250 million.
The PS also revealed that the government will spend around Sh36 billion for nationwide electricity supply this year, 2025. He emphasized the dangers of using unclean energy, citing that 26,000 people in the country die each year due to pollution from such energy sources. Additionally, Mr. Wachira announced plans to convert 24 diesel-powered boreholes to solar energy to reduce environmental pollution.
During the same event, Garsen MP Ali Wario urged residents to adopt improved cooking jikos to promote better health and prevent deforestation in the region.
