Katima Mulilo: A seven-year-old boy who was fighting for his life in the Katima Mulilo District Hospital after being run over at Singalamwe village by a pickup, passed away Tuesday night. The Grade One learner from Sesheke Combined School in the Kongola area was busy crossing the road when the accident occurred on Tuesday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force’s traffic unit for Zambezi, Sergeant Alex Mawaya, stated that the boy was seriously injured during the accident, which occurred on Kamega Road. “The information we got from our team is that it all happened fast and the boy suffered a head fracture in the process. The driver only realised that he had run someone over later on,” he said.
The driver has been arrested and faces charges of reckless and negligent driving and driving with an expired driver’s license. The vehicle also had an expired licence disk. Mawaya had previously indicated that if the boy succumbed to his injuries, an additional charge of culpable homicide would be added.
The driver is expected to appear in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court this week.
