Senegal’s Presidential Election Postponed by President Macky Sall

DAKAR – President Macky Sall of Senegal announced the postponement of the presidential elections originally scheduled for February 25, 2024. The declaration came on Saturday, with President Sall citing the controversial inclusion of a dual national in the candidate list and ongoing tensions between the National Assembly and the Constitutional Council as reasons for the delay.

According to Burkina Information Agency, In a video message released on his X account, the Senegalese leader also reiterated his decision not to seek reelection, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring the upcoming elections are credible, transparent, and conducted in peace.

The announcement follows recent developments in the Senegalese political landscape, including the creation of a parliamentary commission by the National Assembly on January 31, 2024. This commission is tasked with investigating allegations against two judges following the disqualification of Karim Wade’s candidacy, who is considered to be a dual national, highlighting the complex interplay between legal, legislative, and electoral processes in Senegal.
