Senegal Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity at Rabat Summit

Rabat: The Republic of Senegal reiterated on Monday in Rabat its firm and constant support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over all of its national territory, including the Sahara region. This position was expressed in the Joint Communiqué adopted at the conclusion of the work of the 15th High Commission of Moroccan-Senegalese Cooperation, co-chaired by the Head of the Moroccan government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko. According to Burkina Information Agency, Senegal welcomed the historic adoption, on October 31, 2025, by the United Nations Security Council, of resolution 2797 which enshrines, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, as the only serious, credible, and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to this issue. In the joint communiqué, both parties highlighted the climate of fraternity and mutual understanding that characterized the work of this commission, which ma de it possible to conduct a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation and to identify new perspectives for its strengthening. Regarding the Initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI aimed at promoting access to the Atlantic for landlocked countries of the Sahel, both parties reaffirmed their willingness to continue consultations with all the States concerned, for its implementation within the framework of an inclusive and mutually beneficial partnership. At the opening of the proceedings, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch noted that the historical trade routes linking Morocco to its African hinterland played a decisive role in strengthening this rapprochement, particularly by crossing Senegal, thus promoting economic and human exchanges and contributing to the establishment of a deep cultural and social exchange between the two countries throughout the centuries. For his part, the head of the Senegalese government, Ousmane Sonko, stressed that relations between the two nations are based in parti cular on centuries-old human, spiritual, economic, and cultural ties, as well as on political trust built over time, while specifying that the very dynamic economic and trade cooperation between the two countries can be further strengthened. The two countries signed several cooperation and partnership agreements, memoranda of understanding, and protocols of agreement during this 15th Morocco-Senegal Joint High Commission for Cooperation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, signed the Joint Communiqué concluding the work of this 15th session of the High Joint Commission for Moroccan-Senegalese Cooperation. On the occasion of this Joint High Commission, His Majesty King Mohammed VI offered, on the same day, a luncheon in honor of the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, and the delegation accompanying him, chaired by the Head of the Moroccan governme nt, Aziz Akhannouch. During his visit, Prime Minister Sonko was received in audience by the President of the Moroccan House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alami and the President of the Moroccan House of Councilors Mohamed Ould Errachid.
