Senate Health Committee Approves Operations at Longisa County Referral Hospital in Bomet

Bomet, Kenya – Longisa County Referral Hospital has received clearance from the Senate Health Committee to continue providing medical services to residents of Bomet County and neighboring regions. This approval comes as a result of the committee’s countrywide inspection of County Referral Hospitals, during which they recommended the expansion of Longisa Hospital’s facilities.

According to Kenya News Agency, Senator Jackson Mandago, the main goal of their tour was to assess the performance of the health sector in Bomet County and evaluate the current status of Longisa Hospital. He highlighted the importance of developing strategies to enhance the healthcare sector and ensure the delivery of high-quality services across all counties.

During a press briefing session, Mandago commended Longisa Hospital for its exceptional performance, particularly in providing advanced medical treatments such as dialysis, not just to Bomet residents but also to people from surrounding counties. He emphasized the significant strides made by the county government in raising healthcare standards. However, he pointed out that despite the hospital’s achievements, there is a need for increased budget allocations to further improve health facilities and address space constraints.

Mandago also mentioned that the Senate Health Committee is committed to addressing issues related to the delayed disbursement of drugs procured by the county through the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), as well as resolving challenges associated with the wage bill.

He stressed the importance of county health facilities being approved by the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), highlighting its positive impact on public healthcare services.

Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei, also present during the visit, echoed Mandago’s sentiments. He stated that the committee’s main objective was to assess the hospital’s performance, efficiency, and functional capabilities in serving the residents of Bomet. The visit provided the committee with valuable insights into the healthcare system’s functionality and the county’s management of skilled healthcare professionals, including specialists.

Sigei also mentioned that the committee explored issues related to healthcare infrastructure investments and innovative solutions to address periodic shortages of essential medical supplies. He assured that the committee is committed to finding solutions to these challenges.
