Seizure of Fraudulent Goods Prompts Customs to Intensify Anti-Fraud Measures

Ouagadougou: The General Directorate of Customs has announced a significant seizure of goods that were fraudulently brought into Burkina Faso, including items such as sugar, rice, cement, spaghetti, oil, alcoholic beverages, detergents, mayonnaise, and garis. These products were intercepted during control operations aimed at combating smuggling and fraud, activities that negatively impact the national economy.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the divisional customs inspector, Dr. Yves Kafando, stated that technical services will soon conduct checks to ascertain whether some of the seized items are suitable for human consumption. He also mentioned that the means of transport used for smuggling these goods will be confiscated, and the perpetrators will face the prescribed penalties. Additionally, those involved will be brought before the competent courts to face charges.

Dr. Kafando highlighted a meeting on July 5, 2025, with importers and transporters at the Directorate General of Customs to stress the importance of adhering to customs procedures and the necessity of completing formalities in the offices. He expressed concern that despite these efforts, some individuals continue to bypass regulations, creating unfair competition for economic operators who properly pay duties and taxes.

He urged customs officers nationwide to remain vigilant in combating practices that undermine public revenue mobilization. Meanwhile, the arrested smugglers confessed to their actions and requested forgiveness, pledging not to engage in fraudulent activities again. The customs authorities have vowed to intensify the battle against fraud to safeguard Burkina Faso's economic interests.
