Kehancha: Security agencies in Kehancha town have successfully destroyed explosives and detonators seized in Kuria West Sub County. Speaking during the destruction process at the Kehancha grounds, Kuria West Deputy Commissioner Andrew Mwiti emphasized that they were acting in compliance with court directives issued by the Kehancha law courts.
According to Kenya News Agency, security agencies had seized 45 boxes of explosives and 107 detonators, which were suspected to have been smuggled into the sub-county. In connection with this, ten individuals were arrested and subsequently arraigned at the Kehancha police station. Deputy Commissioner Mwiti highlighted the potential risks to the county and national security if the explosives had fallen into the wrong hands.
Tom Wafula from the Migori Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)-Bomb disposal unit also addressed the community, urging residents to act as vigilant watchdogs and report any suspicious activities to security agencies to help secure the community. The presence of illegal mining activities in the region has been blamed for the importation of explosives, posing significant threats to local populations.
The destruction process was carefully overseen by officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and mining departments, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the collaborative effort required to ensure public safety.
