Scribes Urged to Promote Peace, Responsible Journalism

Kisii: Journalists in Kisii County have been urged to act as agents of peace and development. Speaking during the World Press Freedom Day 2026 celebrations in Kisii town, Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui emphasized the theme of this year's celebration, 'Shaping a Future at Peace: Press Freedom, Journalism and the Pursuit of Human Rights in Africa,' which highlights the media's essential role in fostering peace, dialogue, and democracy.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kirui noted that journalism extends beyond reporting news or incidents and includes the responsibility of promoting peace while preparing news. He pointed out that achieving peace and security requires collaboration with stakeholders, including the media, not just law enforcement. Kirui expressed his commitment to partnering with the media and ensuring a conducive environment for their work.

He also warned journalists against spreading unverified news, citing social media as a significant contributor to fake news. Kirui encouraged journalists to verify information through open communication with law enforcement.

Reverend James Mogire, Bishop of Getembe Church of God in East Africa, Kisii town, also attended the event. He highlighted the media's role as a pillar of democracy, accountability, reconciliation, and social transformation. Mogire emphasized the importance of journalists giving voice to the voiceless, exposing corruption, challenging injustice, and preserving truth amid propaganda.

Mogire urged the media to remain courageous, ethical, and truthful, avoiding sensationalism, political manipulation, or corruption. He also called on citizens to use their freedom responsibly and reject hate speech and online abuse. Mogire encouraged everyone to be ambassadors of peace in their daily lives.

The 2026 WPFD theme signifies a global desire for peace within the context of respecting human values and civil liberties, including freedom of expression, which are vital for sustaining societies.
