The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng continues to engage with learners through various social crime prevention programmes such as the Junior Commissioners programme.
On Friday, 26 May 2023 SAPS Kagiso hosted learners from eleven (11) secondary and high schools within their policing precinct on a public speaking competition to select Junior Commissioners.
Schools which took part included; Ahmed Timol Secondary, Boipelo Secondary, Kagiso Senior Secondary, Lodirile High, Madiba Secondary, Mafaesa High, Nomzamo Madikizela Mandela Secondary, Mandisa Shiceka Secondary, Mosupatsela High, Thathulwazi Secondary and Thuto Pele Secondary Schools.
The participants were expected to come up with a strategy/approach or plan to counteract gruesome incidents of crime that they have experienced in their learning environments, as well as build partnerships and participating in school safety programs and in sports to reduce crimes such as bullying, murder, robbery, substance abuse and gangsterism.
It was a tight competition, but at the end the best speakers were elected as the Junior Station Commissioner, Junior Vispol Commander, Junior Detective Commander and Junior Head of Support.
All the participants were applauded and encouraged by the acting Station Commander, Colonel Mabuso and invigilators for their time and hard work. They also thanked teachers for preparing their learners for such a demanding task.
