Katima mulilo: Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, on Thursday met with residents of Katima Mulilo at the Ngweze community hall to discuss their concerns and the government’s plans for the region.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Sankwasa announced the government’s intention to formalise informal settlements and issue title deeds to residents. He emphasised that the country is committed to addressing the issue of informal settlements where residents lack proper land ownership. He stated, “Swapo as a party and as a movement went to war to liberate the country, to come and do the best things and change what was wrong; therefore, the Swapo party cannot come now and do the wrong things. Those who are doing wrong in the name of the party should make way for people who want to do right.”
Sankwasa reminded residents about the upcoming elections in November 2025 and urged them to nominate candidates who will work to improve their town and region. He clarified that as a national minister, he cannot be a permanent presence in Katima Mulilo and is thus appointing an administrator to manage the town’s affairs until the next election.
The minister officially handed over letters removing the Katima Mulilo town councillors from office on Wednesday, citing governance failures and ignored directives. Regarding the way forward, he urged the residents to shun tribalism and prioritize the development of the town. He also called on businesses in Katima Mulilo to honour their corporate social responsibilities, especially to the poor and the vulnerable.
Residents commended Sankwasa for his leadership style but also raised several pressing issues. They demanded more serviced land, the writing off of municipal debts for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, pensioners, the unemployed, and child-headed households, and the non-renewal of the Redforce Debt Management contract once it expires.
