Sangue Hosts Advocacy Meeting for National Family Planning Week to Address Maternal Health

Sangue: The meeting room of the High Commission of Reo was the venue for a significant advocacy meeting on Friday evening, aimed at supporting the National Family Planning Week. This event was also held in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Day and included screenings for cancers, STIs, and viral hepatitis. The gathering aimed to enhance the engagement of various stakeholders in efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event saw participation from local authorities, community leaders, and health professionals. High Commissioner of Sanguie, Talari Germaine Ouoba, emphasized the critical nature of this initiative, highlighting the country's high maternal mortality ratio of 198 per 1000 births and an unmet need for family planning rate of 16.4%. She called for a coordinated effort involving ministries, technical and financial partners, local authorities, and communities. She also expressed gratitude to the Burkina Faso Red Cross for its support.

Chief Medical Officer of the Reo health district, Dr. David Nikiema, presented the health indicators for the first half of 2025. He reported a reduction in maternal deaths to zero, compared to three in 2024, though the family planning coverage rate remains at a low 12%. Dr. Nikiema pointed out that there was one maternal death recorded in the second half of the year and stressed the necessity of enhancing staff capacity, securing financial resources, and increasing community awareness, with a particular focus on male involvement.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the High Commissioner expressed her gratitude to the participants for their input and commended the health workers and local teams before officially closing the session.
