Sandbondtenga: A Network of Cybercriminals Caught in the Net of the National Police in Kaya

Sandbondtenga: The central police station in Kaya has put an end to the activities of a group of individuals specializing in fraud via electronic systems, the Burkina Information Agency learned from a police source. Suspected of identity theft on digital platforms and fraud via electronic systems, these alleged perpetrators were presented to the prosecutor of Faso this Thursday, March 5, 2026.

According to Burkina Information Agency, it all started with a complaint filed on February 21, 2026 by a victim residing in Kaya, whose photograph had been fraudulently used as a profile picture on Facebook. The investigations carried out by the investigators made it possible to identify a network composed of three men, nicknamed Phano, Medasco, and Raski, all residing in Ouagadougou.

These young people in their twenties were creating Facebook pages linked to WhatsApp or Messenger accounts, presenting themselves as young women offering intimate services. Their victims, contacted through these platforms, were asked to make a payment to get in touch with the supposed young women. After the funds were transferred, no contact was possible and the money was systematically diverted to other accounts.

The investigation revealed that several money deposits were made in Burkina Faso and from other countries in the sub-region and Europe, including Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Italy. The estimated financial loss, which is significant, is not yet exhaustive.

According to the National Police, this situation reminds citizens, once again, of the rules of caution to observe on social networks and invites them to immediately report any suspicious activity.
