CHENNAI — Approximately 600 employees of Samsung Electronics and their union members were detained by police in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, during a protest on Tuesday, as they pressed for better wages and union recognition.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the workers, who have been on strike since September 9, were detained for causing public inconvenience without proper authorization for the demonstration. Police officials stated that the detained individuals were held in four different wedding halls around the city.
This incident follows a related event on September 16, where at least 150 striking Samsung employees were detained in Kancheepuram district after attempting to march to the deputy commissioner's office to submit a memorandum regarding their ongoing strike. The employees have been demanding an increase in wages and formal recognition of their union at the Samsung plant in the state.
The protests have escalated with workers setting up a makeshift tent near the plant in Sunguvarchatram, continuing to boycott work. Negotiations involving Samsung management, protesting workers, and local government officials have not yet led to a resolution.
The Samsung plant in Tamil Nadu reportedly employs over 1,700 workers, with more than 1,000 participating in the strike. The situation remains tense as both sides seek to resolve the impasse.
