Sahel Region Leaders Show Solidarity with Burkina Faso After Barsalgho Terrorist Attack

OUAGADOUGOU — In a strong display of regional unity, emissaries from Niger and Mali met with Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the President of Faso, to express their condolences and solidarity after the recent terrorist attack in Barsalgho.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization of Mali, the delegation delivered a message of compassion on behalf of General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of Niger, and Colonel Assimi Goïta, President of Mali and current President of the Confederation “Alliance of Sahel States” (AES). The meeting, held this Monday morning, focused on reaffirming the commitment of the Sahel states to support Burkina Faso in the aftermath of the August 24, 2024 attack, which targeted civilians and has deeply affected the region.

Colonel Maïga highlighted the shared grief and resolve of the AES member states in combating terrorism. He emphasized the ongoing military efforts that are starting to hinder terrorist activities in the region, noting that despite the shift in terrorist tactics towards attacking civilians, the morale of the population and the determination of the leaders remain unshaken.

The ministers from Niger and Mali also reassured the Burkinabe leadership of their continued support in the fight against terrorism, asserting that the collective goal of eradicating terrorism from the Sahel is within reach under their combined leadership.
