Sahel Produces Over 6,000 Tonnes of Vegetables Amid Insecurity During 2023-2024 Dry Season.

DORI: More than 6,000 tonnes of vegetables were produced in the Sahel region during the 2023-2024 dry agricultural season, despite ongoing security challenges. A total of 6,640.5 tonnes of various crops were harvested from approximately 411 hectares, as noted by the Sahel Regional Directorate for Agriculture, Animal Resources, and Fisheries (DRARAH) during a consultation meeting held in Dori. According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting, which took place on November 8, 2024, involved producer organizations and partners who gathered to review the achievements of the 2023-2024 dry season and to devise an operational plan for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The Secretary General of the Sahel region, Mr. Abdoul Karim Zongo, highlighted the significant efforts that led to the cultivation of 411.24 hectares with vegetables and other market garden crops across 90 sites, culminating in an estimated production of 6,640.5 tonnes. Mr. Zongo attributed the success of these production activities to the dedication of all agents of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, Animal, and Fisheries Resources (DRARAH) and their technical and financial partners. He acknowledged their critical role in supporting all phases of production. Despite the positive outcomes, Mr. Zongo emphasized the presence of significant challenges that need to be addressed to ensure greater success in the 2024-2025 season. The DRARAH reported that the 2023-2024 dry season's production represented a decrease of 34.88% compared to the previous season, which had reached 8,957.43 tonnes. Notably, over 90% of the current production was attributed to market gardening, including 2,333.9 tonnes of onions, 1,358.84 tonnes of cabbages, and 932.54 tonnes of tomatoes. The DRARAH also evaluated the requirements for seeds and fertilizers necessary for the forthcoming 2024-2025 dry season.
