Saccos Call for Support to Boost Savings in Turkana County

Nanam ward: The Nanam Ward Community in Turkana County has appealed to the Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP) to bolster their local Savings and Cooperative Societies' (SACCOs) efforts to enhance credit access for members.

According to Kenya News Agency, community members made this call during a Participatory Integrated Community Development (PICD) model session, where they identified Nanam Ward Savings, Nasinyono Livestock, and Nasinyono Farmers as existing SACCOs. Additionally, four other SACCOs are in the registration process. Recognizing the impact of SACCOs in Turkana, FSRP aims to strengthen farmer producer organizations and livestock groups' capacities to secure affordable credit facilities to build agricultural and food systems resilience.

Juma Vitalis, the Nanam Team Lead, emphasized that support through local SACCOs would be extended to drought-affected farmers to rebuild their crop and livestock systems. The initiative also aims to encourage the future adoption of modern climate-smart technologies to enhance productivity. The community meeting included representatives from Nanam, Mogila, Kapetadie, and Lorau villages.

Later during the meeting, members established the Nanam Ward Community Driven Development Committee, electing John Auren Lotukoi, Nangole Jibril, and Aloch Emuria as Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively. Lotukoi signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the county's FSRP, witnessed by Nangole Alfred, the Ward Administrator.

County Department of Agriculture officials, including Moses Ekai, Mathew Echukule, and Eregae Ephraim, a representative of the area Chief, were present during the exercise. FSRP aims to support 180,000 farmers in accessing credit for productive investments by the end of the project.
