OUAGADOUGOU — During his inaugural visit to Burkina Faso, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized the strong foundation of mutual trust and respect that characterizes the relationship between Russia and Burkina Faso. Lavrov arrived in the Burkinabe capital on Tuesday for a visit aimed at bolstering the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the relationship between the two countries is marked by a rich history and is based on mutual trust, respect, and sympathy. “Our relations have a good history and are based on mutual trust, sympathy and respect. Contacts at all levels are very intense. It is obvious that our negotiations will help realize the goals set by our presidents and give new impetus to our friendly relations,” Lavrov stated on Tuesday evening, following his arrival.

Lavrov’s visit comes on the heels of the agreements reached during the meeting of their presidents at the second Russia-Africa summit in July 2023, which he credits for the current vitality of the bilateral relations. He also acknowledged the efforts of his Burkinabe counterpart, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, in assisting the reopening of the Russian embassy in Ouagadougou in December 2023, after a 31-year hiatus.

“We are implementing a program to resume the activities of our embassies in Africa, and Burkina Faso is practically the first country to do so,” Lavrov noted, expressing his gratitude for the support that has facilitated these developments.
