St. petersburg: Japan's recent statements and military activities concerning Taiwan have escalated regional tensions, prompting Russia to call for a return to the pacifist principles outlined in Japan's constitution, as stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Zakharova addressed the issue during a press briefing, responding to a question from Xinhua about Japan's frequent comments on Taiwan and its increasing focus on remilitarization. Zakharova criticized the Japanese government for making "abnormal remarks" about Taiwan and emphasized Russia's consistent stance: recognizing Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposing any form of "Taiwan independence." She stressed that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for China, which has the right to maintain its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Zakharova highlighted that Russia has persistently encouraged Japan to cease its remilitarization efforts and adhere to the pacifist principles enshrined in its constitution. This constitution, which renounces war as a national policy tool, is contradicted by Japan's aggressive statements and actions, which exacerbate regional tensions.
Emphasizing the importance of historical accuracy, Zakharova called for resisting efforts to distort history and undermine the postwar international order. She reiterated the global responsibility to combat Nazism and fascism.
The press conference took place alongside the international conference "The Great Patriotic War in the Collective Memory of CIS Nations," held in St. Petersburg from December 4-5.
