Russia Urges IAEA to Identify Attacker in Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Incident

VIENNA — In a recent meeting with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, demanded that the IAEA publicly identify those responsible for the attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Ulyanov stressed the importance of the IAEA’s role in addressing the ongoing security threats to the nuclear facility, arguing that silence on the issue promotes further aggression that could jeopardize nuclear safety. Last Sunday, Yevgeny Balitsky, the governor of the Zaporozhye region, reported that Ukrainian army shelling at Energodar led to a fire in the cooling facilities of the nuclear plant. Although the fire broke out near the plant’s cooling towers, it did not impact the plant’s operations. The IAEA, after conducting two inspections, has yet to determine the cause of the fire.
