Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree approving an “updated nuclear doctrine” that permits the use of nuclear weapons if Ukraine deploys Western non-nuclear missiles against Russia or Belarus. This development was reported by TASS and further disseminated by AIB.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the change in doctrine comes amid reports from American media about President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to utilize U.S.-supplied missiles deep within Russian territory. In response, Moscow has asserted its right to employ nuclear weapons should it or its allies face aggression.

The updated doctrine outlines five critical conditions under which a nuclear strike could be considered. These include: receiving credible information on ballistic missile launches toward Russia and its allies; the use of nuclear or other mass destruction weapons against Russian territories or allies, including military sites outside Russia; attacks on critical military or state sites that would disr
upt nuclear response operations; conventional weapon attacks on Russia or Belarus that threaten their sovereignty or territorial integrity; and reliable information regarding mass take-offs of strategic aircraft, missiles, or drones crossing Russian borders.

The decision to deploy nuclear weapons rests solely with the President of Russia, who may choose to notify political and military leaders of other nations or international organizations as necessary. This newly adopted doctrine replaces the previous version from June 2020, which had itself replaced an earlier version from a decade prior.
