Moscow: Russia pursues consensus-based reform of the United Nations to better reflect the global landscape, particularly by increasing the representation of African and Latin American countries, Russian Federation Senator and Bureau Member of the Supreme Council of Russian ruling party “United Russia” Andrey Klimov said.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Klimov, in an exclusive interview, urged the need to reform the UN institutions. He emphasized that the reorganization of all UN institutions should be based on the consensus of all nations, underscoring the lack of participation from African and Latin American countries at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Klimov also pointed out the insufficient representation in executive offices.

Klimov expressed opposition to a system where a minority of nations holds disproportionate influence over the majority. He highlighted that sustaining the current system without reforms is impractical, given the significant changes that have occurred over the nearly 80-year history of the UN. He insisted on the necessity to prepare the UN to function effectively in the future.

In recent years, several African countries, including Ethiopia, along with the African Union, have been advocating for reform and greater representation at the UN. The common African position on UNSC reform was adopted by the AU member states in 2005.
