Rundu Unveils New Traffic Unit Worth More Than A Million

Rundu: The Rundu Town Council (RTC) on Thursday officially inaugurated its Traffic Law Enforcement Unit under the Community Service Department. The newly established unit, staffed by three traffic officers, has acquired vehicles and equipment valued at N.dollars 1.3 million.

According to Namibia Press Agency, RTC Chief Executive Officer Olavi Nathanael stated that the unit represents a strategic step toward enhancing road safety, order, and mobility in Rundu. Nathanael emphasized the growing need for a dedicated local authority unit to manage and enforce traffic regulations as the town experiences increases in population, traffic volume, and commercial activity.

Nathanael highlighted that the council had approved the establishment of the unit in September 2021 but faced delays due to processes such as obtaining ministerial approval, recruiting officers, and procuring essential equipment. He announced that the unit is led by a senior traffic officer, supported by two additional officers.

The unit has acquired two vehicles and equipment, including breathalysers, a speed camera, and firearms. It is expected to yield positive results, such as reduced road accidents, injuries, and fatalities, along with improved compliance with traffic regulations.

The unit's responsibilities encompass enforcing municipal traffic by-laws and national road traffic regulations, conducting routine patrols, running checkpoints, and carrying out road safety inspections.
