Rundu: Rundu Chiefs Football Club’s eight-year hiatus from the Namibia Premier Football League may soon be over if they secure victories in two of their three remaining matches in the North East First Division Football League next weekend.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Rundu-based outfit is having their best season so far, just two seasons after surviving relegation in the same league, and are en route to the league title. The team has lost only two games in 19 encounters, with 11 wins and six draws. They boast a 22-goal difference and sit on the summit with 39 points.

Rundu Chiefs are now two wins away from claiming the title and eventually returning to the topflight league. They need to beat Shooting Stars and Eastern Chiefs next weekend before playing for pride in an all-Rundu affair against United Stars.

On Saturday, Chiefs beat Further Fighters 2-1 at Rundu before settling for a two-all draw against Ohangwena NamPol on Sunday to solidify their stay at the top of the standing.

United Stars failed to close the gap at the top after falling to Ohangwena NamPol 3-0 in their backyard, before consoling their loss with a 3-2 win over Further Fighters. They now sit second in the standing with 35 points, four points shy of Rundu Chiefs’ tally.

KK United are also trailing with 34 points after going down to Chiefs Santos 1-0, before hammering Oshikango Chiefs 2-1 away from home.

On Saturday, Oshikango Chiefs thrashed relegation-threatened Kulisika Palace 4-1, Ntunguru and Shooting Stars sharing the spoils in a six-goal thriller, while Kangweru Black Tops defeated Eastern Chiefs to move one point above the relegation zone.

Sunday encounters saw Ntunguru hammering Eastern Chiefs 4-0, with Chiefs Santos beating Kulisika Palace 2-0. Shooting Stars triumphed 2-1 against Kangweru Black Tops.

Relegation woes continue to mount on Further Fighters, Oshikango Chiefs, Kangweru Black Tops, Shooting Stars, and Kulisika Palace.

The upcoming weekend’s matchups will be crucial in distinguishing between true contenders and pretenders, with some teams facing relegation likely to be shown the exit as well.
