Roundup: Sinner, Swiatek Cruise Amid Upsets at Australian Open

Melbourne: Defending men's champion Jannik Sinner and women's second seed Iga Swiatek advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open, while fourth seeds Taylor Fritz and Jasmine Paolini faced unexpected exits on Saturday. Alex de Minaur, Australia's title hope, and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina were among the winners on day seven.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Sinner showcased his prowess by defeating Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in just over two hours. He is set to face Denmark's 13th seed Holger Rune, who emerged victorious in a five-set battle against Miomir Kecmanovic that concluded at 12:45 a.m. Sinner, on a 17-match winning streak, expressed satisfaction with his performance but acknowledged areas for improvement.

Fourth seed Fritz was ousted by veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils, who capitalized on Fritz's 36 unforced errors and delivered 24 aces. Monfils won 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4 and will compete against 21st seed Ben Shelton in the next round. Monfils, the second oldest man after Roger Federer to reach the fourth round in Melbourne, spoke of his belief in his abilities.

Local favorite de Minaur displayed resilience in his 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Francesco Cerundolo, a match that lasted nearly four hours. De Minaur aims to become the first Australian men's champion in Melbourne since Mark Edmondson in 1976.

Swiatek continued her pursuit of an Australian Open title, defeating Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-0. She will face 128th ranked Eva Lys in the last 16. Swiatek's dominant performance included 24 winners and only 12 unforced errors.

Paolini suffered a three-set defeat against 28th seed Elina Svitolina. Inspired by her husband Monfils' win, Svitolina overcame a sluggish start to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, marking her first victory over a top-five opponent since Wimbledon 2023.

Rybakina, despite battling a back spasm, secured a 6-3, 6-4 win against Dayana Yastremska. Her fitness remains a concern ahead of her fourth-round match against Madison Keys.

Emma Navarro, the eighth seed, narrowly defeated former world No. 2 Ons Jabeur 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and will next face ninth seed Daria Kasatkina. Kasatkina advanced with a straight-sets win over Yulia Putintseva.

The fourth round begins Sunday with women's defending champion Aryna Sabalenka facing 14th seed Mirra Andreeva, and third seed Coco Gauff playing against Belinda Bencic. In men's matches, second seed Alexander Zverev, four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, and 10-time tournament winner Novak Djokovic will compete.
