Atlanta: Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid will clash in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals after eliminating Monterrey and Juventus in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, in Atlanta, Guinea international striker Serhou Guirassy struck two first-half goals as Dortmund secured a 2-1 win over Monterrey. Guirassy opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a slick one-two play with Karim Adeyemi, beating Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada at his near post. The Adeyemi-Guirassy combination proved effective again in the 24th minute with a first-time shot past Andrada. Former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos had a late chance to equalize but missed the target, ensuring Dortmund’s advancement to face Real Madrid in New Jersey on Saturday.
Guirassy expressed satisfaction with his performance, despite missing additional scoring opportunities. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Monterrey’s experienced players and emphasized Dortmund’s readiness to face Real Madrid. Ramos, who joined Monterrey earlier this year, praised his team for their effort and lamented missed chances that led to their exit from the tournament.
In Miami, Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Juventus thanks to a goal from Gonzalo Garcia. Garcia scored in the 54th minute with a header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross. The young Real Madrid player highlighted his satisfaction with both his goal and the team’s performance. Real Madrid controlled much of the match, but Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio made 11 saves to keep the scoreline close. Kylian Mbappe made a return from illness, coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute.
Juventus manager Igor Tudor acknowledged the challenges faced by his team, citing the quality of the opposition, weather conditions, and player fatigue. Despite the disappointment, Tudor recognized the effort his players put forth in the match.
