ROSATOM Team to Visit Ouagadougou for Nuclear Plant Project

OUAGADOUGOU — A delegation from ROSATOM, Russia’s national atomic company, is scheduled to visit Ouagadougou from August 6 to 10, 2024, to progress on Burkina Faso’s inaugural nuclear power plant project, according to an announcement from the Burkinabe Ministry of Energy.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the visit marks a significant step in Burkina Faso’s ambitious plan to double its electricity production by 2030 through nuclear energy. The project, which is receiving backing from the International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA), is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation’s energy independence and sustainability. In January 2024, Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director and Head of the IAEA Department, visited Burkina to promote the advantages of nuclear energy, describing it as “clean, green, reliable, less expensive and with predictable long-term costs.” He also emphasized the durability of nuclear infrastructures, noting their resilience to water and wind.

The upcoming visit by the ROSATOM team will focus on laying the groundwork for the construction of the power plant and ensuring all preparatory measures align with international standards and practices.
