Addis Ababa: The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will only thrive if supported by robust air connectivity, Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime said. Speaking at the first Ethiopian Aviation Forum that opened today, the minister noted that intra-Africa connectivity is a catalyst for economic integration.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Alemu emphasized that the expansion of Ethiopian Airlines into various hubs exemplifies the country’s Pan-African commitment. He urged African nations to liberate airspace, reduce barriers to cross border travel, and harmonize regulations to foster a competitive and affordable air transport market. The minister encouraged the continent to invest in regional routes to unlock trade, tourism, and investment potentials.

Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa highlighted Ethiopia’s national reform as the beginning of a new chapter for the tourism sector, elevating it to a top priority for driving economic growth. She noted that the ministry was established as an independent entity to unlock Ethiopia’s vast tourism potential. Large-scale destination development projects across various regions further demonstrate the importance placed on the tourism sector.

According to Selamawit, the role of aviation is more important than ever in realizing substantial growth in the tourism sector. Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew emphasized the aviation industry’s pivotal role in driving Africa’s growth through integration, underscoring the power of collaboration to elevate African aviation.

The forum, running until April 25, 2025, has brought together government officials, aircraft manufacturers, global aviation stakeholders, and distinguished guests from around the world.
