About 759 road accidents were reported from January 1 to March 1, 2023, against 961 accidents during the same period in 2022, i.e. a 21.02% drop, according to statistics released on Sunday by the National Road Safety Observatory. The number of deaths caused by these accidents, however, increased by 22.64% to 159 deaths, according to the same source. The number of the wounded fell from 1,341 during the same period last year to 1,057 this year (-21%). Carelessness and inattention are the main causes of accidents (37.55% of accidents) followed by speeding (16.07% of accidents). Nonetheless, speeding remains the leading cause of road deaths (28.72%) followed by carelessness (31%). Failure to respect the rules of priority and pedestrian crossings are also among the main causes of accidents cited by the observatory.
