Road Accident Fatalities Rise in Cambodia in First Half of 2024


PHNOM PENH—Cambodia has experienced an increase in road accident fatalities in the first half of 2024, with 793 deaths reported, compared to 756 during the same period in the previous year, according to the National Police.



According to Namibia Press Agency, the report also indicated a slight rise in injuries from road accidents, totaling 2,116 this year, up from 2,072 last year. Speeding was identified as the primary cause, accounting for 40% of these accidents. Other significant factors included failing to yield the right of way and not driving on the correct side of the road, which together constituted 33% of the incidents.



National Police Deputy Chief Lt. Gen. Chev Hak further explained that the remaining 27% of accidents were caused by reckless overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol, drowsiness, vehicle malfunctions, and adverse weather conditions. Despite the increase in fatalities and injuries, the total number of road accidents slightly decreased to 1,534 in the first half of 2024, down from 1,548 in the same timeframe last year.



Road accidents continue to be the leading cause of death and injuries in Cambodia, with an annual cost to the nation estimated at approximately 466 million U.S. dollars.
