Rift Valley and Eastern Regional Coordinators Warn Against Cattle Rustling Financing

Rift Valley: Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Mr. Abdi Hassan and his Eastern counterpart Mr. Paul Rotich have issued a stern warning to politicians allegedly financing criminals involved in cattle rustling in the region. This announcement follows a security meeting involving the Regional and County Security Intelligence Committees from Laikipia, Meru, Isiolo, Samburu, and Marsabit.

According to Kenya News Agency, the government is resolute in its ongoing security operations in the North Rift and neighboring counties, despite facing threats and intimidation from certain political leaders. He emphasized that no political pressure would deter the government’s efforts to combat the long-standing issue of cattle rustling and deliver services to taxpayers.

Mr. Hassan also mentioned the progress made in the disarmament campaign, noting that over 200 firearms have been surrendered, with Samburu County leading in compliance with the government’s amnesty program. He encouraged those still in possession of illegal guns to surrender them and join in nation-building efforts.

Eastern Regional Coordinator Mr. Paul Rotich reported on the success of the multi-agency team in arresting several foreigners who entered the country without proper immigration documents. This action has significantly curtailed the trafficking of hard drugs from neighboring countries.

Rotich also addressed the cultural practices of pastoralist communities, urging them to prioritize education for their children to enable them to compete nationally in various sectors. He emphasized the role of National Police Reservists (NPRs) in supplementing security efforts, particularly in areas prone to cattle rustling and other crimes. He instructed that NPRs found not working for their communities should be disarmed.

Furthermore, Rotich directed County Commissioners and security teams to ensure that NPRs operate under the guidance of the County Police Commander rather than local politicians. He reminded administrators that they are funded by taxpayers and are therefore responsible for delivering quality government services to residents.
