Bagassi – Authorities of the special delegation of Bagassi in the province of Balé have issued a press release urging residents to avoid consuming fish from the Sipohin dam due to significant fish mortality.
According to Burkina Information Agency, “a significant mortality of fish was noted at the Sipohin dam on the morning of Saturday June 8, 2024.” Investigations are underway to determine the causes of the fish deaths. Until results are available, authorities are advising against consuming fish from the dam.
A resident reported that the first rains had drained large amounts of waste into the dam, which could be a contributing factor. The dead fish observed were small, according to the same source. An administrative source confirmed that a crisis unit was convened on Monday, June 10, 2024, to address the situation.
The Sipohin dam is a vital water source in the commune of Bagassi.
