Kakamega – Residents of Bukhungu Location in Kakamega County have expressed their support for the construction of a police post at Nyayo Tea Zone in Milimani. During a public participation meeting organized by Bukhungu Location Chief Ben Muhanji, the residents also requested the installation of high mast flood lights to enhance security.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has donated half an acre of land for the police post, which will serve the area from Nyayo Tea Zone to Milimani and parts of Lurambi. He revealed that the National Government will collaborate with Kakamega County Government, the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), and Masinde Muliro University for the construction.
During the forum, Masinde Muliro University security officer Bonface Manoah stated that the university is participating in the construction, marking their second such involvement. He mentioned that the university had previously aided in building a police post at Kefinco estate in Lurambi Sub County, which significantly reduced insecurity.
Manoah noted that the university had installed high mast floodlights in Kefinco and Koromatangi estates and plans to erect more in Nyayo Tea Zone. He also encouraged community members providing student accommodations to register with the Landlord Hostel Owners Association at the university’s Dean of student’s office. This association aids in dispute resolution between landlords and students and serves as a platform for offering accommodation during student intakes. Manoah highlighted the opportunity for locals to benefit from the university’s growing student population, which includes over 23,000 students in need of accommodation.
