Real Madrid’s Carvajal Suffers Season-Ending Injury, Faces Surgery

MADRID—Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal confirmed a severe cruciate ligament injury following his team's Saturday night victory against Villarreal, likely sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Carvajal sustained the injury during a collision with Villarreal's Yeremy Pino in injury time of the match, which Real Madrid won 2-0. The Spain international was in evident distress as he was helped off the pitch. Early Sunday, Carvajal revealed on social media his injury's seriousness, stating he would require surgery and several months of recovery, expressing his eagerness to return to the field.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti conveyed his concerns post-match, highlighting the demanding schedule his team has faced—seven games in four weeks—as a contributing factor. "This is something that happens often because of the calendar," Ancelotti noted, emphasizing Carvajal's crucial role in the squad.

With Carvajal's injury, Real Madrid now has only Lucas Vazquez as a specialist right back in the first team. Additionally, the injury impacts the Spanish national team, as Carvajal was slated to participate in upcoming matches against Denmark and Serbia. Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente, will need to select a replacement.

Ancelotti also mentioned concerns for another key player, Vinicius Jr, who sustained a neck injury during the same game. His participation in the upcoming international break with Brazil remains uncertain.
