Nairobi: Residents of Ringiti Island in Suba West Sub-County are grappling with significant losses after severe winds accompanying heavy rains wreaked havoc in the area. The downpour and strong winds, which struck on Thursday, resulted in the destruction of several building roofs, severely impacting the local community.
According to Kenya News Agency, the tempestuous weather led to the roofs of two classrooms at Ringiti Primary being blown off, leaving pupils without proper learning facilities. In addition, nine families found themselves homeless as the winds tore off the roofs of their homes, exacerbating their struggles.
Daniel Sure, the Secretary of Ringiti Beach Management Unit, voiced his concerns regarding the plight of the learners and the affected families. "The affected families are undergoing a lot of tribulations since the rains also damaged other household properties. Children's learning materials were also destroyed at home," Sure remarked. He highlighted the dangers posed by the ongoing rainy season, which makes it hazardous for children to study under temporary structures or trees.
Sure appealed for assistance from well-wishers and government agencies. He noted that the storm also damaged two churches in the area. "We appeal to government agencies and well-wishers to help us repair the damages which occurred. We also appeal for humanitarian aid to the affected families," Sure urged.
