The rainfall recorded in most regions of Tunisia in January 2023 was very heterogeneous and below normal, with a deficit reaching 48%, the National Meteorological Institute (INM) said Friday in a climatological bulletin dedicated to the first month of the current year.

The total cumulative rainfall (of the 27 main stations) for January amounted to 580.6 mm, while the normal situation for the same stations is 1122.8 mm, or 52% of the normal for the month.

According to the INM, the month of January saw an uneven decrease in rainfall in most regions, with the percentage of deficit in the northern regions ranging from 1% in Bizerte to 99% in Siliana, except for the regions of Tabarka and Kelibia. The cumulative rainfall in the latter was higher than the reference total and the percentage of surplus was 58% and 21%, respectively.

The central regions also experienced a decrease in rainfall, with deficits ranging from 61% in Mahdia to 91% in Kairouan. The deficit reached 100% in Monastir and Kasserine.

In the south of the country, the deficit was more significant, ranging from 74% in Médenine to 99% in Tozeur and Tataouine. There was no rain at all in Gafsa in January, according to the INM.
