Rachuonyo East Commended for Maintaining Peace Amidst Nationwide Protests

RACHUONYO EAST – Job Kemey, the Deputy County Commissioner of Rachuonyo East, has commended local residents for their peaceful conduct during the recent protests against the Finance Bill 2024. The area has maintained peace since the 2022 general elections, demonstrating a strong commitment to community harmony.

According to Kenya News Agency, the sub-county has shown exemplary behavior during both the elections and the recent nationwide protests. At a peace meeting held last Friday, Kemey expressed gratitude towards the residents and peace stakeholders for their efforts in maintaining order during these challenging times. The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to assess the peace committee’s progress since the last general election and plan future actions.

Apollo Bwana, Chief Council of Elders in Homabay County and Chair of the Sub-County Peace Committee, emphasized the inevitability of conflict and the importance of effective management by leaders. He highlighted the proactive approach taken by the peace committee in preventing conflicts from escalating. During the meeting, Bwana also commented on the recent protests by Gen Z against the Finance Bill, praising the youth for their noble intentions but cautioning against any violent behaviors such as destruction and looting.

The peace meeting also served as a platform to review the achievements and challenges faced by the peace committee, which includes diverse representatives from the community such as women, church leaders, security teams, youth, business owners, and media personnel.
