Qatar and Somalia strengthen cooperation on disaster management

The Director of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Macallim Abdulle, met with the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Somalia, Mr. Abdalla Binu Saalim Al-nuceymi, and officials from Qatar Fund and Qatar Charity on Saturday, September 23, 2023. The meeting focused on how Qatar could support SoDMA in delivering aid to the liberated areas of Galmudug and Hirshabelle administrations, where security forces have recently regained control from Al-Shabaab militants. They also discussed how Qatar could participate in the preparation and response to the El-Nino floods that are expected to occur in some parts of the country in the coming months.

After the meeting, the Director and the Ambassador jointly visited the Center for Emergency Relief Operations of SoDMA, where they officially opened the lower offices of the center that Qatar Charity recently equipped. The center is responsible for coordinating and managing humanitarian assistance in Somalia, especially during emergencies and disasters. The Director thanked Qatar for its generous contribution and expressed his hope that the new offices would enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of SoDMA’s work.

Finally, the Director and the Ambassador jointly laid a stone for a mosque that will be built inside the Center for Emergency Relief Operations of SoDMA. The mosque will serve as a place of worship and spiritual guidance for the staff and beneficiaries of SoDMA. The Ambassador said that Qatar was proud to support Somalia’s development and stability, and that the mosque was a symbol of the brotherly ties between the two countries. He also praised SoDMA for its vital role in saving lives and alleviating suffering in Somalia.
