Brand new magistrates court for Keimoes Pre-Presidential Imbizo site visits by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure
Today I visited the Keimoes Police station as well as the site for the brand new Magistrate court which my department will be constructing adjacent to the Police Station in the Northern Cape town. I was accompanied by Deputy Minister, Noxolo Kiviet on the site visit as part of the pre Presidential Imbizo outreach programme.
Keimoes Police Station:
The construction of the Keimoes Police station which started in 2012, was completed by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) and handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS) in 2014. The project was delivered on time and within the scope valued at R78 million. Currently the DPWI regional team executes unscheduled and scheduled maintenance as and when the need arises.
Construction of a new Magistrates Court:
The new Magistrate court facility will be built in the heart of Keimoes and will bring great benefit to thousands of people and surrounding communities in the greater ZF Mgcawu district, Northern Cape. The project is estimated at a cost of R100 million, and will create much-needed jobs for local communities during the construction phase.
The brand new facility will comprise the construction of a double storey building with the lower ground floor level being designated for parking, and the ground and upper floors consisting of the courts and offices.
The ground floor level will house the Criminal (District) court with all the auxiliary services, the South African Police Services (SAPS) & District Correctional Services (DCS) areas including holding cells and court cells, administration areas, cash hall areas, public and security areas.
The planning process of the new court has been completed and the project is now ready to go to the tender stage around the 18th of November 2022. The tender will be advertised nationally and all qualifying service providers across the country will be allowed to tender. The tender document makes provision for the main contractor to appoint qualifying local service providers for labour and materials.
DPWI has been working closely with the community to ensure the success of the much anticipated project through the establishment of a project steering committee which includes representatives from DPWI, the local municipality, councillors, community leaders and members. My appeal to the community is to work with government to ensure the success of this project which has great benefits for the community through sustained job creation, subcontracting for local businesses and ultimately a brand new Magistrates court and justice facility.
Presidential pre-Imbizo District Development Model outreach Program:
I visited the Keimoes community and specific DPWI projects today ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s District Development Model Imbizo to be held in Upington tomorrow. The spirit of the Presidential Imbizo encourages Government to engage and interact with communities directly face to face. It brings together all three spheres of government, under ‘one roof’ to account, listen and interact directly with communities.
I look forward to the completion and delivery of this project to the Department of Justice and the greater ZF Mgcawu district, Northern Cape. We have a duty to ensure that public spaces such as government facilities are accessible, friendly and comfortable so that we leave a good impression on the citizens we serve.
Investing in decent buildings and facilities also shows citizens that government cares and that we are using public land, public buildings and public funds for public good.
