Kapenguria, West Pokot – Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni led a tree planting exercise at the Aramaket ECD Centre in Kapenguria, emphasizing the importance of trees in promoting public health. Speaking to West Pokot residents, PS Muthoni pointed out that trees mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, which is linked to diseases such as cholera and respiratory ailments. She encouraged the planting of fruit trees for their nutritional benefits and their role in preventive healthcare.

According to Kenya News Agency, Muthoni highlighted the interconnection between climate change and health, noting the annual loss of 14,000 lives in Kenya due to climate-related issues. She cited the lack of access to safe water for 2.2 million people and the prevalence of respiratory complications as significant challenges. The PS also mentioned the medicinal properties of some trees native to West Pokot County, while cautioning against the use of unlicensed herbal medicines. She further advised residents to plant appropriate tree species to combat malaria and to avoid cutting down immature trees. The tree planting event, which also saw the participation of West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin and other local officials, was part of a broader effort to protect the environment and reduce health risks associated with climate change.
