Professor Roland Bicaba Appointed to Lead Buamu Language Promotion Commission

Ouagadougou: Roland Bicaba, a professor of linguistics at Norbert Zongo University in Koudougou, was appointed to lead the Buamu National Subcommission on Saturday, August 31, 2024, during a general assembly. The 11-member executive office of the subcommission, tasked with promoting the Buamu language, will work under Bicaba’s leadership, succeeding Kani Gaston Gnoumou, who led the subcommission for 30 years.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Bicaba has pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor and called for the support of the Bua community to advance the subcommission’s efforts. The commission has previously organized seminars on the Buamu alphabet and the language’s transcription, developed a Buamu lexicon, and provided working tools for language practitioners.

Gnoumou emphasized the importance of passing the leadership role to younger generations, noting that the Buamu lexicon now contains terms that researchers in mathematics and philosophy can use. The general assembly also reviewed and adopted the subcommission’s statutes and internal regulations.
