Professor Oumar Traoré Advocates for Trust in Mathematics to Aid Burkina Faso’s Development

OUAGADOUGOU — Professor Oumar Traoré, Director of the Science and Technology Training and Research Unit (UFR/ST) at Thomas Sankara University, has emphasized the critical role that mathematics can play in Burkina Faso’s development, provided that decision-makers trust in the work of mathematicians.

According to Burkina Information Agency, speaking at the opening of the African Mathematics School on Monday, Professor Traoré highlighted how mathematical modeling has produced valuable insights, such as understanding and controlling terrorism in the Sahel. He argued that these mathematical solutions could significantly influence policy and decision-making if applied by relevant authorities.

Traoré pointed out that in countries like South Korea, mathematics has been instrumental in national development. He called for greater collaboration between mathematicians and practitioners in Burkina Faso to translate mathematical research into practical applications that address real-world challenges, thereby improving decision-making processes.
