Bengo: After harvesting around 120 tons of Robusta coffee in 2024, Monserrate Farm's forecast for this year is a mere 60 tons, primarily due to insufficient rainfall and the absence of an irrigation system. Located about 12 kilometers from the village of Bula Atumba in Bengo Province, the 1,000-hectare Monserrate farm dedicates 40 hectares to coffee cultivation.
According to Angola Press News Agency, owner Ernesto Cirilo stated that the farm exclusively produces Robusta coffee because it is considered more resistant to local conditions. Currently, the coffee beans are half the size they were during the same period in 2025. If it does not rain in time, the coffee will fall to the ground and lose quality.
Around 100,000 new coffee seedlings have been planted to renew techniques and production. Currently, they still depend heavily on coffee trees that are 50, 60, and even 70 years old. Cirilo advocated for radical pruning to allow old trees to recover and resume production in two years and achieve full yield in the third year.
He also spoke of the need to diversify products, such as bananas and cocoa among coffee plantations, as a strategy to generate additional income. This is why he has planted six hectares of cocoa on his land.
