Private Universities in Kenya Seek Government Funding Amid Economic Challenges

Nairobi: private universities are advocating for a more equitable funding model from the government, addressing the economic burdens faced by parents and students in the current challenging economic climate.

According to Kenya News Agency, Zetech University Vice Chancellor Prof Njenga Munene emphasized the importance of a unified approach in education funding, particularly during times when the cost of living is soaring. Speaking at the university’s 7th graduation ceremony at their Mang’u Main Campus, Prof. Munene acknowledged the support Zetech University has received from various government bodies, including the Ministry of Education, the University Funding Board, the Higher Education Loans Board, the University and Colleges Central Placement Board, and the Commission for University Education. However, he called for continued and fair support to all universities to help ease the financial burden on parents and sponsors, and to make higher education more attractive and economically beneficial to the country.

Under the new funding model, students at private universities are not eligible for the same scholarships as those in public institutions and face limits on funding. This disparity has raised concerns about the potential negative impact on private university students and the institutions themselves.

In response to job market demands, Zetech University has introduced new courses in Information, Communication and Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Computing. Prof. Munene highlighted the rapid shift towards ICT globally and the necessity for universities to adapt their programs accordingly to ensure their students remain competitive in the job market.

Catherine Muraga, CEO of Microsoft Africa Development Center and Chief Guest at the ceremony, echoed the need for universities to evolve and offer technology-focused courses. She also urged corporate leaders to play a more active role in mentoring and providing employment opportunities for fresh graduates. Muraga emphasized that companies must adapt to new ways of working by embracing technology, listening to the younger generation, and continuously training them to join the workforce. She noted that technological advancements are transforming companies and that young minds are leading this revolution.
