Prime Minister Calls for Scientific Solutions to Burkina Faso’s Challenges.

Ouagadougou: The Prime Minister, Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélem de Tambèla, extended an invitation to researchers and innovators to develop scientific and technological solutions to address the pressing issues facing Burkinabe society. This call was made during the opening session of the 2024 General Assembly of the High National Council for Scientific Research and Innovation (HCNRSI) in Ouagadougou.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Prime Minister’s address, delivered by the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Pr Adjima Thiombiano, emphasized the nation’s commitment to sustainable and homegrown solutions through research. This approach aims to tackle the socio-economic development challenges currently faced by the country. The theme of this fourth ordinary session of the HCNRSI General Assembly is “Research results transfer mechanism: issues and funding prospects.”

Dr. Kyélem de Tambèla highlighted the necessity of substantial internal funding for science and innovation to
effectively address socio-economic challenges. He noted that, alongside the budget allocated to research, the government, led by President Ibrahim Traoré, is engaging with various companies, corporations, and investors to secure financial and substantial support for research and the training of skilled personnel in vital development sectors.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the significant contributions of research to sectors such as agriculture and health, underscoring the competence and talent within the Burkinabe scientific community. He expressed confidence that the work of the HCNRSI would yield relevant recommendations and resolutions to enhance efficient and sovereign research serving Burkina Faso, Africa, and the global community.

During the session, Dr. Kyélem de Tambèla officially installed the new members of the National Council for Scientific Research and Innovation. The National High Council for Scientific Research and Innovation was established following the 2013 enactment of the law governing
scientific research and innovation. A decree adopted on October 3, 2016, outlines the attributions, organization, and operation of the Council, which serves as a body for foresight, reflection, and consultation in research and technology matters.
