Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Participates in CAF Friendly Match Amidst Africa Cup of Nations Bid

Addis ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed joined the field today in a Confederation of African Football (CAF) friendly match at Addis Ababa stadium, playing alongside former African football legends and members of the Ethiopian national team.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the friendly match was organized as part of the 46th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF. The event underscores Prime Minister Abiy’s ongoing efforts to boost the sports sector, which includes the expansion and construction of multiple sports facilities across Addis Ababa. Among these, the Adey Ababa stadium, which the Prime Minister and the President of CAF visited today, is nearing completion.

In a move to strengthen Ethiopia’s bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in June 2024, Abiy’s administration is actively engaging in preparatory activities. This initiative has been bolstered by the appointment of former Nigerian football stars Daniel Amokachi and Nwankwo Kanu as Ethiopian ambassadors to promote the country’s candidacy.
