President Kais Saied held on Friday a telephone conversation with the President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall.

During this telephone conversation, President Saïed seized the opportunity to reaffirm Tunisia’s pride in its African membership and its constant concern to further develop its relations with other African countries at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Quoted in a press release from the Presidency of the Republic, President Saied insisted that the remedies to the problems of the African continent must come from the will of its peoples.

President Saïed’s telephone conversation with his Senegalese counterpart came after a flurry of reactions following statements by President Kais Saïed that were deemed “racist” regarding migration flows from sub-Saharan Africa.

Tunisia’s official position on the issue was clear. Tunisia believes that the statements made by President Saïed have been misinterpreted and manipulated and the reactions that followed are in line with a false and unhealthy campaign orchestrated to tarnish the image of Tunisia and thus harm its relations with the countries of the African continent.

In addition, the telephone conversation between the two presidents was an opportunity to review the history of Tunisian-Senegalese relations since independence and to discuss ways to further promote them in different sectors and fields.

According to the same press release, President Saied extended an invitation to the Senegalese president to visit Tunisia, who responded favourably, pending the setting of a later date.
