Luanda: The President of Togo, Faure Gnassingb©, recently appointed by the African Union (AU) as mediator in the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is expected to arrive in Luanda on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Angolan presidency. The Togolese leader is set to meet with the chairman of the African Union, Joo Louren§o, during his visit.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Faure Gnassingb© assumed the role of mediator after Joo Louren§o stepped down from the position to concentrate on Angola’s responsibilities as the current chairman of the African Union. Angola has emphasized the importance of focusing on the broader priorities established by the AU, necessitating a shift away from its previous role in mediating the conflict.

In January 2025, the situation in the eastern DRC escalated when the M23 group launched a rapid offensive in the province of North Kivu, seizing control of the cities of Goma and Bukavu. This development has underscored the urgency of diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflict.
