Brussels: Angolan Head of State, Joo Lourenço, arrived this Wednesday morning in Brussels, Belgium, to participate in the top-level summit on the Global Alliance (GAVI) Strategies for vaccination and immunisation for the 2026-2030 period. The event, taking place this Wednesday in Brussels, features the intervention of Joo Lourenço, who is also the current Chairperson of the African Union.
According to Angola Press News Agency, upon his arrival at Brussels International Airport, Joo Lourenço was welcomed by members of the meeting’s organising committee, the Angolan ambassador to Belgium, Edgar Gaspar Martins, and members of the Angolan Executive who are part of the presidential delegation. The presence of the Angolan Head of State reinforces the strategic positioning of Angola and the African Union in the global agenda on health. Angola has advocated for fair access to vaccines and the promotion of regional production of immunisers, particularly within the framework of the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accele
rator (AVMA).
The summit marks the initiation of the process to reinstate the GAVI Funds for the new strategic cycle from 2026 to 2030. GAVI is a public-private partnership focused on saving lives and protecting public health by increasing equitable and sustainable access to vaccines in low-income countries. Co-organised by the European Union and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the gathering is held under the motto ‘Global Summit: Health and Prosperity Through Immunisation.’
Since its creation in 2000, GAVI has contributed to the immunisation of over one billion children, thereby helping to avoid more than 17 million deaths.
