Accra: Angolan President Joo Lourenço on Saturday extended his congratulations to Yamandú Orsi, the newly elected President of Uruguay, following Orsi’s victory in the Latin American nation’s presidential election. Lourenço expressed his hopes for enhanced diplomatic relations and strengthened bilateral cooperation between Angola and Uruguay.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the congratulations were conveyed through a letter delivered by Ambassador Azevedo Xavier Francisco, who represented President Lourenço at the inauguration ceremony held in Montevideo’s Independence Square. In the letter, Lourenço emphasized the significance of expanding economic ties, particularly in the agri-food sector, and reiterated Angola’s openness to foreign private investment.

During the presentation of the letter, Angolan diplomat Azevedo Xavier Francisco reaffirmed Angola’s commitment to fostering cooperation in multiple areas, notably trade and food security. The newly elected President Orsi, who was victorious in the
election held on November 24, 2024, overcame the conservative candidate Álvaro Delgado, who was supported by the outgoing president, Luis Lacalle Pou.

Yamandú Orsi, previously a governor of the department of Canelones and a history professor, received backing during his campaign from former president José “Pepe” Mujica. Orsi has identified environmental issues, assistance for small producers, and social inclusion as his administration’s key priorities.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by numerous international dignitaries, including King Felipe VI of Spain and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, highlighting the global significance of the event.
