Luanda: The president of the ruling MPLA, Joo Louren§o, said Tuesday that he will work and do everything in his power to honor the name of Angola and Angolans during the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU).

According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Louren§o, also President of the Republic, made the statement during the ceremony in his honor, promoted by the Secretariat of the Political Bureau of the MPLA, for his election to the rotating presidency of the African Union. The event was presided over by the party’s vice president, Mara Quiosa, who, on behalf of the executive, greeted President Joo Louren§o and congratulated him on this historic milestone for Angola, in a year in which the country celebrates 50 years of national independence.

“We are very proud of your election, comrade President,” said Mara Quiosa, affirming that “your party, which is also your family, gives you a hearty congratulations for this achievement and will be with you to help you carry out, with strength and courage, the noble mission entrusted to you”. The MPLA President, who received a bouquet of flowers during the tribute, emphasized that this achievement does not belong to the citizen Joo Louren§o, but to Angola and to all Angolans.

“We must all be very proud of the recognition that the African continent is giving to Angola, and I will do everything to honor the name of this country and of Angolans in the exercise of my functions as Chairperson of the AU,” said Joo Louren§o. February 15, 2025, will go down in Angolan history as the date on which the leaders of Africa’s largest political organization, meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, unanimously elected the Angolan head of state, Joo Louren§o, as chairman of the African Union.

During the 38th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government, the AU Chairperson warned that the various issues related to peace and security in Africa constitute a factor blocking the continent’s development. Faced with a scenario of several regional conflicts, with Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo among the most worrying, Joo Louren§o assured that he will work to find solutions for peace and security on the continent, while leading the most representative and prestigious political-diplomatic organization in Africa.
